What does the data centre hiring market look like in 2026?

Data centre hiring has moved from steady growth to a full-blown talent crunch. AI infrastructure demand is driving an unprecedented build-out — the global sector is forecast to nearly double toward 200GW, and the European hyperscale market is projected to grow at close to a 20% CAGR through 2031. Project scale has changed with it: peak site crews that once topped 750 workers now exceed 4,000 on modern mega-campus builds.

The supply side has not kept up. Nearly two-thirds of operators say they struggle to find and retain qualified staff, and industry staffing research identifies recruiting qualified people as a top organisational concern. Junior-to-mid facilities operators are in the shortest supply and turn over fastest, while the scarcest — and best paid — profiles are engineers who can commission AI-ready halls, resolve power bottlenecks and optimise liquid cooling. Demand for cooling-system engineers alone has grown 67% globally since 2022.

How much do data centre professionals earn?

The benchmark below shows the annual salary levels and contractor rates for employing data centre professionals — presented as lower, medium and upper ranges. To secure top talent in this tight market, we advise employers to consider offering 10–15% above these figures. In the US, overtime, shift differentials and on-call premiums frequently add $9,000–$22,000+ on top of base for permanent staff. If your offer sits at the lower end of the range, expect longer time-to-hire and higher counteroffer risk.

Every market below is benchmarked against the same nine roles — facility engineer, senior facility engineer, data centre manager, and the mechanical, electrical, HVAC, infrastructure, network and cyber security engineers who keep a modern hall running — so you can compare like for like. As a quick guide: in the United States a facility engineer sits around a $122,000 median and an electrical engineer $130,000; in the United Kingdom a facility engineer is about £70,000. Across Europe, medians run from roughly €62,000 (Portugal) to €111,000 (Denmark) for a facility engineer. In Australia a data centre manager sits near an A$182,000 median and an electrical engineer A$154,000; in New Zealand the equivalents are about NZ$160,000 and NZ$149,000. In Canada a data centre manager centres on roughly CA$149,000, and in Singapore an electrical engineer is around an S$120,000 median. Contractor day rates appear alongside each permanent role.

Why do data centre professionals leave — and what keeps them?

Pay rises alone no longer guarantee loyalty. 37.6% of European professionals who received a pay rise in the last twelve months still planned to change company within a year — a clear signal that money is doing less of the heavy lifting on retention than it used to. Junior facilities staff turn over fastest, which is exactly where operators can least afford gaps in a 24/7 critical environment.

The packages that hold people are broader than base salary. Standard components now include shift and on-call allowances, annual performance bonuses, overtime, private healthcare, enhanced pension contributions and additional leave. Critically, employers increasingly fund training and certification support, and engineers with Authorised Person (AP/SAP) status or HV switching experience command premium uplifts and clearer progression.

The structural retention levers matter most: defined progression paths, meaningful project work on AI-ready builds, and retention incentives for critical-environment specialists. In a market where nearly two-thirds of operators are already short of qualified people, keeping your existing team is as valuable as hiring your next one.
