Senior DevOps Engineer

Pearson Carter is working with an established organisation that is investing heavily in the development and modernisation of its infrastructure and technology landscape. As part of this continued expansion, they are seeking a highly experienced Senior DevOps Engineer to take ownership of key areas of their production environment and help drive the next stage of its technical evolution.

This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced infrastructure or DevOps professional with strong knowledge across AWS, Linux, automation, networking and modern deployment practices. You will play an important role in maintaining a resilient, secure and high-performing environment while identifying and delivering improvements across the wider infrastructure estate.

You will work collaboratively with development, infrastructure and technical teams, providing senior-level support for complex production environments, improving automation and deployment processes, and helping to resolve challenging operational issues.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of significant components of the organisation's AWS infrastructure, including EC2, VPCs, load balancing and associated networking services.

Administer, maintain and continuously improve business-critical Linux production environments, ensuring strong levels of stability, availability and performance.

Support and optimise a range of application and database platforms, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

Configure, maintain and improve CDN and WAF services, including environments utilising Akamai and Cloudflare.

Develop and maintain infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code, using Terraform and Ansible to improve consistency, repeatability and operational efficiency.

Work alongside development teams to enhance deployment, release and delivery processes, including CI/CD pipelines built with Bitbucket Pipelines and comparable tooling.

Develop and maintain comprehensive infrastructure and application monitoring, alerting and observability using tools such as Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.

Act as a senior point of escalation for complex infrastructure incidents, carrying out detailed investigation and root-cause analysis before implementing preventative measures.

Assess existing systems and operational practices regularly, identifying opportunities to improve scalability, resilience, security, availability and cost efficiency.

Design and implement automation, scripts and tooling to eliminate repetitive manual processes and streamline infrastructure operations.

Develop practical administration and operational solutions using Python and Bash.

Contribute to infrastructure planning around capacity, performance, disaster resilience and security.

Work closely with other technical teams to ensure infrastructure changes are implemented effectively and production services remain reliable.

Participate in a shared 24/7 out-of-hours support and on-call rota.

Experience & Technical Skills

At least 5 years' commercial experience within Systems Engineering, DevOps, Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering or a comparable senior technical position.

Extensive hands-on experience supporting Linux-based production environments.

Strong practical knowledge of AWS, particularly EC2, VPC design, networking and load balancing.

Experience working with production application and database technologies such as nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

Demonstrable Infrastructure as Code experience, with strong practical knowledge of Terraform.

Hands-on experience with Ansible and automated provisioning or configuration management.

Good scripting and automation capability using Python and Bash.

Commercial experience working with CDN and WAF technologies. Exposure to Akamai would be beneficial.

Good understanding of CI/CD principles and experience working with Bitbucket Pipelines or a similar continuous integration and deployment platform.

Experience responding to production incidents, carrying out structured root-cause investigations and implementing sustainable technical improvements.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities, with the confidence to diagnose complex infrastructure and systems problems.

Effective communicator who is comfortable working with developers, infrastructure specialists and wider technical stakeholders.

Able to work independently, take ownership of technical projects and prioritise effectively when dealing with multiple operational demands.

Comfortable working in a high-pressure production environment and making considered technical decisions when required.

Willingness and ability to participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call arrangement.

Salary

Salary is dependent on experience and will go up to 75k.

Location

This role is fully remote but have an office in Scotland.
