Senior Engineer

Pearson Carter is partnering with a growing organisation that is investing in the development of its cloud infrastructure, systems architecture and technology operations. To support its continued growth, the business is looking to recruit an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer who can help shape its infrastructure strategy while ensuring its existing platforms remain secure, stable and efficient.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for a broad range of infrastructure and operational technologies, with a particular focus on AWS, Linux, infrastructure automation, cloud networking and production reliability. Alongside maintaining business-critical systems, you will contribute to technical projects that enhance scalability, strengthen security and improve the overall performance of the organisation's technology environment.

Working closely with development teams and other technical specialists, you will help establish robust infrastructure practices and improve the way systems are deployed, monitored and maintained. You will also play an important role in resolving complex technical challenges, investigating service disruptions and introducing automation to simplify operational tasks.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced DevOps, Cloud, Infrastructure or Systems Engineer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems, improving established environments and taking ownership of important systems within a collaborative technical team.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of AWS cloud infrastructure, ensuring services including EC2, VPCs, load balancers and networking components are configured, maintained and optimised effectively.

Monitor and manage Linux servers and production systems, proactively addressing performance bottlenecks, availability concerns and operational risks.

Support the administration and performance of web servers, application services, caching technologies and database platforms, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

Maintain and improve the security and delivery of internet-facing services, working with CDN, WAF and edge technologies such as Akamai and Cloudflare.

Build and maintain reusable infrastructure provisioning solutions using Terraform, alongside Ansible for configuration management and system automation.

Partner with software engineers to improve release processes, deployment reliability and delivery workflows, making effective use of Bitbucket Pipelines and similar CI/CD tools.

Establish and refine monitoring, logging, alerting and observability practices using platforms such as Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.

Provide senior-level technical support during major incidents, leading investigations where appropriate and implementing corrective measures to prevent recurring problems.

Review infrastructure architecture and existing operational procedures, recommending changes that improve availability, security, maintainability and resource efficiency.

Experience & Technical Skills

A minimum of five years' experience in a relevant technical discipline, such as DevOps Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, Systems Engineering or Infrastructure Operations.

Strong background in administering Linux environments, including supporting business-critical services and diagnosing issues in live production systems.

Substantial hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure, particularly EC2, VPCs, cloud networking and load-balancing technologies.

Practical knowledge of web and application infrastructure, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

Demonstrable experience designing, implementing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code, with a strong working knowledge of Terraform.

Experience using Ansible to automate configuration, manage system consistency and simplify infrastructure operations.

Proficiency in scripting with Python and Bash, with the ability to build practical solutions for operational challenges.

Familiarity with internet-facing infrastructure, CDN services, web application firewalls and edge security platforms. Experience with Akamai would be advantageous.

Understanding of automated software delivery, deployment pipelines and CI/CD practices, including Bitbucket Pipelines or an equivalent solution.

Experience investigating service outages and infrastructure faults, identifying underlying causes and delivering long-term fixes.

Strong technical reasoning skills, with the ability to analyse complex issues across interconnected systems and develop effective solutions.

Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with software developers, infrastructure specialists and other technical stakeholders.

A proactive approach to technical ownership, with the confidence to lead improvements and manage competing priorities without constant supervision.

The ability to work methodically under pressure when responding to urgent incidents or resolving issues affecting production services.

Flexibility to participate in a shared 24/7 on-call rota, including occasional out-of-hours support.
