Pearson Carter is partnering with an established engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of high-performance capital equipment for a diverse international customer base. Due to continued business development and investment in its technical operations, the organisation is looking to appoint a skilled Software Systems Engineer to strengthen its engineering team.
This position offers the chance to contribute to the software that drives complex industrial machinery and integrated control solutions. You will work on both new engineering developments and existing product platforms, taking part in activities ranging from interpreting system requirements and planning software functionality to implementation, testing, commissioning and post-deployment support.
Working alongside colleagues across software development, product engineering, manufacturing and project delivery, you will help ensure that software systems perform reliably and meet the needs of the business and its customers. You will also gain exposure to specialist technologies associated with industrial automation, machine operation and motion control.
The ideal candidate will enjoy combining software development with practical engineering challenges. This is an opportunity to apply your technical knowledge in a manufacturing-led environment where software plays a central role in the performance and functionality of advanced equipment.
If you are looking for a role that combines hands-on development, technical problem-solving and involvement in international engineering projects, we would be pleased to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Review customer specifications, product requirements and engineering documentation to determine software requirements and define the functionality needed for each project.
- Work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver software that supports equipment performance, manufacturing processes and customer applications.
- Create and maintain software design specifications, system architecture documentation, interface definitions and descriptions of intended system operation.
- Write, adapt and maintain application software and machine-control functionality using suitable programming tools and languages.
- Prepare technical records covering software configuration, design decisions, system operation, testing activities and maintenance procedures.
- Design and execute test activities to assess software performance, identify defects and verify compliance with project requirements.
- Participate in software reviews and engineering meetings, contributing recommendations on implementation methods, system design and technical improvements.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, external specialists and internal stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve technical queries and coordinate solutions.
- Assist with software installation, equipment integration, site acceptance activities and commissioning, including occasional overseas visits to customer locations.
- Keep up to date with relevant developments in industrial software, automation technology, control engineering and software development methods.
- Build and maintain detailed knowledge of existing software products and established control platforms, including systems written in VB.NET.
- Provide specialist software knowledge and technical assistance to the Software Systems Manager in relation to core applications, control platforms and product support.
Experience
- A relevant HND, degree or equivalent higher-level qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or a closely related technical subject.
- At least five years of professional experience in software development, ideally involving the delivery and maintenance of commercial applications.
- Demonstrable programming experience with VB.NET and an understanding of maintaining and extending established software applications.
- Background in developing software that communicates with, supervises or operates machinery, industrial equipment or other physical systems.
- Understanding of industrial automation, machine-control principles or motion-control technology, or a strong motivation to develop expertise in these areas.
- Ability to interpret business and engineering requirements and turn them into practical software designs, specifications and supporting documentation.
- Experience carrying out debugging, software verification, functional testing and structured fault investigation.
- Knowledge of the relationship between application software, hardware interfaces and the wider components of an integrated engineering system.
- Exposure to PLC-based control environments would be an advantage.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence to work with engineers, customers, suppliers and other technical stakeholders.
